I'm excited to have an article published in the October 2012 edition of Software Development Times.
What's it about? At some stage in their careers, many software developers realise they have a laundry list of career aspirations they'd like to achieve 'one day'. The problem is each of these aspirations requires a substantial investment of time. There are many reasonable objections against any one of them.
The article presents a way to lower that barrier of entry by combining all the items on the laundry list around a single project. It does this by framing an Open Source project in the context of a PhD thesis. It then provides detail, showing how to combine research methodologies such as Action Research and Grounded Theory with industry approaches such as Iterative Development to deliver a unified result. Finally it provides concrete examples in the form of conference papers, journal articles and a finished thesis.
